Adventures in Aviation-Learn to Fly, Be a Pilot (Rising grades 9-12)
July 13 - July 18, 2014
Come fly with us! In this unique adventure, you will go through a pilot training course taught by a certified flight instructor where you will learn the same information and perform the same flight maneuvers, as a student pilot going through flight school. The only difference is you will use flight simulators instead of real airplanes. Through presentations and hands-on demonstrations, you will study the same flight training curricula as a pilot, learn training operations and practice maneuvers using the laboratory flight simulators. This adventure will takes place at the Challenger Learning Center of Richland County School District One, the only center of its kind in the state of South Carolina.
This course is a favorite among students!
Meet the Instructor(s)
Ed Triest is a licensed commercial pilot with Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), Certified Flight Instructor of Instruments (CFII), Basic Ground Instructor (BGI), and Advanced Ground Instructor (AGI) certifications. With almost 6,000 flying hours to his credit, nearly 5,000 of those hours are as an instructor pilot in a flight school environment. He has trained hundreds of pilots over a 24 year period. Ed now uses his aviation teaching experience and knowledge as “Commander Triest” at the Challenger Learning Center of Richland County School District One. Using flight simulators in the Aerospace Education Laboratory at the Challenger Center, Commander Triest has developed a unique program that allows students to have a real-world pilot training experience. Commander Triest has worked in public schools and community colleges, has served in the military, has a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, and is a certified scuba diver.
