Meet the Instructor
Whitney Pate is a second-year Master’s student working toward her M.S. in Marine Sciences. She received her B.S. in 2006 from the University of Georgia where she majored in Biology and Marine Sciences. While at USC, Whitney was awarded a Partners in Inquiry (PI) Fellowship for which she was allowed the opportunity to work in an 8th grade science classroom at St. Andrews Middle School during the 2006-2007 school year. Whitney currently works with K-12th graders in an after-school program called Science Quest at St. Lawrence Place in Columbia, SC.
Dara Cadden is a graduate student currently working on her Ph.D. in the dual fields of physical and satellite oceanography at the University of South Carolina. She uses satellite altimetry data as well as global oceanic temperature and salinity profiles to study ocean circulation patterns and to calculate the movement of heat throughout the ocean, a key component in the regulation of the earth’s climate. The most awe-inspiring moment in her scientific life was a trip to the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean (in the Gulf Stream region off the coast of South Carolina) in the Johnson Sea-Link submersible. Descending into the darkness of the deep ocean and being surrounded by all of the beauty and diversity there was a wonderful adventure and a life-changing experience. When she’s not in the lab, Dara spends time with her husband and newborn son, her favorite fish in the sea. |
