Adventures in Pharmacy   
June 8–13
Discover how the pharmacy profession plays an integral role in the continuity of patients’ health care. Read and help fill prescriptions, counsel patients, compound dosage forms, prepare intravenous drug products, take blood pressure, check glucose levels, and more.

Meet the Instructor

Wayne E. Buff graduated from the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy in May, 1973 with a B.S. degree in pharmacy.  After receiving his South Carolina Pharmacists License in 1973, he began practice as a community pharmacist at Westdale Pharmacy in West Columbia, South Carolina.  He continued in this practice setting for 16 years.  In January, 1990 he accepted a position with the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy as an Instructor and Director of Continuing Education.  In December, 1997 he was awarded the Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy.  He currently serves as Associate Dean, University of South Carolina campus, for the South Carolina College of Pharmacy.  His primary teaching responsibilities are in the areas of self-care/nonprescription drug products and community pharmacy practice.A lifelong resident of Lexington, South Carolina, he is married to Gail Wingard Buff, a registered nurse.  They have a son and daughter-in-law that live in Durham, North Carolina and a son and daughter-in law living in White River, Arizona.

Julie M. Sease, Pharm. D., RPh, BCPS graduated from the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy with her Doctor of Pharmacy in 2003.  She went on to complete a Primary Care Pharmacy Practice Residency at the WJB Dorn VA Medical Center and has been a member of the faculty at the South Carolina College of Pharmacy USC Campus since August 2004.  Dr. Sease became board certified in pharmacotherapy in December 2005.  She teaches in a variety of courses within the current SCCP curriculum including the Self-Care and Pharmacotherapy courses and also serves as class advisor to the current P1 class.  Her clinical practice site is the Primary Care Clinics at the Dorn VA Medical Center where she cares for patients who suffer from a number of different disease states including atrial fibrillation, venous thromboembolism, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, and heart failure.  She is a preceptor for rotation students at her practice site as well as for Pharmacy Practice Residents and serves on a number of college and university committees.

Cynthia Phillips, Pharm.D, CDE is a clinical assistant professor with the South Carolina College of Pharmacy. She serves as a consultant for the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veteran’s Medical Center in Columbia, South Carolina where she is the Coordinator for Diabetes Education for Primary Care. Dr. Phillips graduated from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor’s of science in biology and her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree. She spent a year in residency training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. She serves as course coordinator and instructor in the Clinical Assessment Course. She also teaches in the pharmacotherapy lecture series, pharmacokinetics course, and several elective courses. She advises the Rho Chi Honor Society at the USC Campus and is actively participates in Christian Pharmacist’s Fellowship International. Current research interests involve diabetes treatment and patient education, medication therapy management and the impact of pharmacy care on patient outcomes.

Dr. Laura Moore Fox is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutics at the South Carolina College of Pharmacy on the University of South Carolina campus.  Dr. Fox received her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics from the University of Georgia in 1998 and her B.S. in Biological Sciences from Clemson University in 1994.   After receiving her Ph.D., she was appointed as an Assistant Professor at Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona before moving back to the southeast to join the faculty at the University of South Carolina in 2000. 

Her primary research interest is in pharmacokinetics with additional interests in herb-drug interactions, metabolism of herbal supplements, physical compatibility of intravenous and nebulizer admixtures, and the scholarship of teaching.  Dr. Fox enjoys involving students in research and has mentored professional and graduate students in award-winning research projects.

Dr. Fox teaches pharmacokinetics, pharmaceutics, and pharmacy compounding and also precepts students on academic rotation.  In 2006, Dr. Fox mentored a Wal-Mart scholarship recipient in an attempt to identify and encourage her students to pursue careers in academia.  She has been involved in developing novel teaching strategies since receiving an Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award and participating in the TA Mentor program at the University of Georgia.    In 2005, Dr. Fox was the recipient of the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy Teacher of the Year award and received an Honorable Mention for her entry in the 2006 AACP Innovations in Teaching competition, Use of Electronic Products and Product-Based Online Quizzes in Pharmaceutics.

 L. Clifton Fuhrman, Jr, PhD, RPh graduated from the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy in May 1982 with a BS degree in Pharmacy. After receiving his South Carolina Pharmacists License in 1982, he began practice as a community retail pharmacist at Revco DS located in Columbia, SC. He practiced as a retail pharmacist for six years.  He then accepted a position as a staff pharmacist at Baptist Hospital also located in Columbia, SC.  After three years at Baptist Hospital he returned to the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy in January of 1991 to pursue a PhD in Pharmaceutics. His research while in graduate school was in the area of transdermal drug delivery, specifically in the area of enhancers and liposomal delivery of antisense oligonucleotides. He received his PhD in July of 1995 and accepted an assistant professor position at the College of Pharmacy at the University of South Carolina that fall. Since the spring of 2001 he has held the position of Assistant Dean and associate professor. His teaching responsibilities include courses in Pharmaceutics, compounding and hospital laboratories as well as providing an elective senior year Pharmacy Practice Experience rotation dedicated to academia and administration. His research has evolved in to the area educational modalities and specifically web based database technology. One educational project, The Virtual Patient Database, funded by the Procter and Gamble Curriculum Development fund, was awarded the Merck Innovations in Teaching Award at the 2000 AACP meeting. He has published over sixty abstracts and manuscripts in the areas of transdermal drug delivery and pharmacy education.  He has also been awarded the College of Pharmacy “Teacher of the Year” award twice, received the University’s “Advisor of the Year” award in 2004, and was named the South Carolina Health Systems “Pharmacist of the Year” in 2001.
