Each week we will focus on one major aspect of planning a successful wedding, the tentative outline is as follows:
1) Budget- How to set one and still get everything you want!
2) Venues- Primary focus on choosing a theme, decorations, how to "Go Green"
3) Dress Up The Affair- Choosing attire for the entire wedding party
4) Pretty in Floral- Selecting flowers for your ceremony, reception, and wedding party
5) Cake Selection and Choosing a Photographer- taste tests, comparison shopping, how to get the most bang for your buck in selecting vendors
6) Getting the Word Out- How to select invitations, etiquette, and timelines
7) Financial Considerations- Whose side of the family "traditionally" pays for what items? Financial etiquette, shower etiquette, and thank you cards
8) Ready, Set, Go- tying it all together!
About the Author:
Mrs. Annette Hoover, an adjunct professor in the University of South Carolina HRTM college, is a USC graduate 1999 BAIS, 2001 MS HRTM that prides herself with trying to bring real-life experience to the students of USC. Mrs. Hoover was the faculty advisor of the Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) (2000-2004, taking the USC team to the National completion twice due to her leadership. Mrs. Hoover also championed, during her tenure as an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina – Charlotte, their SIFE team, also taking that team to national competition in 2005. Mrs. Hoover developed the first financial course for HRSM undergraduates; teaching them the basics of self-finance. In addition, she teaches HRTM courses in Club Management and Finance. Mrs. Hoover also is well known for her additional development of 2 of the most popular HRTM courses over the past 5+ years. The Wedding Planning (HRTM362??) course and the Festival and Events planning (HRTM383???) course are filled with approximately 70 students each semester that it is offered due to the subject popularity. The Wedding planning course teaches students how to plan a wedding and Mrs. Hoover brings the entire process to the classroom by actually planning and offering a real wedding to one lucky couple each semester the course is offered. The Festival and Events Management course outlines how to organize, conduct and facilitate any type of event, whether it be a charitable fundraiser, an annual function or a conference on any subject.
As a small business owner for All About Brides and Events, with over 35 years of wedding and events management experience, Annette has helped the Columbia community with students supporting the SC Honors Flight, the 2010 Medal of Honor Conference, and many more fundraisers for charity. Teaching by doing and exposing the students to all the intricate details necessary for any of these activities is what makes these unique and upholds Annette’s instructional values.
Mrs. Hoover has been recognized by Dean Patricia Moody and Dean Brian Mihalik of the HRSM as well as the USC President Harris Pastides and has been honored by the Governor of South Carolina, Nikki Hailey as a preferred small business owner to the Governor’s office.
