American Sign Language - Signing Naturally - Level 1B
This eight week course on American Sign Language by using the Signing Naturally, Level 1B will take you to the next level in signing.
Level 1 consists of twelve instructional units divided into 2 Main Levels: Level 1A and Level 1B. Students, who have completed Level 1A, are encouraged to continue learning and take Level 1B. Level 1B consists of Units 7 – 12. In Units 7 - 12, new functions are introduced to help you expand your conversational range from talking about yourself to talking about other people and activities, giving directions and making requests. In the Cumulative Review for those units, you will learn to use your expanded language skills to identify others and give appropriate information to establish connections with Deaf acquaintances. Also, you will develop polite conversational strategies in handling interruptions, including those due to sounds in the environment.
Pre-requisite: Sign Language Level 1A (Introduction course)
Students are required to purchase the Signing Naturally Student Level 1 Workbook (authors Smith, Mikos & Lentz - Publisher, Dawn Sign Press), approximately $35.00, which includes a DVD. The workbook is offered online at a variety of sites. Students purchase this book on their own.

About the Instructor
Josie McDaniel-Burkett, NIC:Master
Josie McDaniel-Burkett, a native of Lexington, South Carolina, has been a working interpreter for over 10 years. She holds an NIC Master from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Currently, Josie is the Interpreter Coordinator for the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind in the greater Midlands area. Her experience includes political, medical, legal, educational, religious and more. Josie has worked in the community, as a video relay interpreter and as a sole proprietor. She enjoys teaching ASL and mentoring other interpreters. She is a member of RID, South Carolina RID, South Carolina Association of the Deaf and the Midlands Association of the Deaf.
Daughter of Deaf parents – she has been richly blessed with understanding Deaf Culture and has been taught to take pride in her first language, American Sign Language. She has been married for over 17 years, has two boys (13 and 4) and fosters children. She is an avid NASCAR fan and loves football but her real passion is providing accessible communication for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community!
